    Afton E. Lavertue's testing chamber

Post  Alethearia on Tue Sep 11, 2012 1:37 pm

OOC: first lesson - for continuity purposes, "OOC" means "Out of character" and after posting an "OOC" please type "IC" (in character) so that we know when your character is talking and when you're talking.

second lesson - for "play well with others" purposes, only post what you do and say. It can get frustrating for both you and other characters when you write what the other person is doing. The term for this is "godmodding" - not to be confused with "godmoding" which is to not only control what the other person does, but to control your affect on the entire universe.

lesson four - For the purposes of keeping us all on the same page, whomever is in charge of the story, aka the admin, will more or less be the dungeon master, writing the universe's reaction to things. For your convenience, I will be posting the narrative in a different color from my character.

And yes, I am aware that I skipped lesson three. I'm not exactly sure why...

IC: You find yourself in a hallway adjacent to a large room. Many doors line this hallway and you can hear voices coming from some of them. Off in the distance, you see someone if very high dress and a very blank stare coming toward you.

Ve hadn't been at the Academy long and, to tell you the truth, she had no idea why Krys had hired her. As a fashion designer, she had little to no experience teaching new people, well, anything. Furthermore, Ve wasn't in full control of her mental faculties. This would be interesting.

Afton shifted her weight. She felt uncomfortable. In fact, there were only a handful of places on what would be considered solid ground where she did feel comfortable. And this certainly wasn't one of them. After a glance ahead at the person approaching her, she turned awkwardly to check the large room. It seemed empty enough. Stiffness gripped her arms and legs as the footsteps grew closer.

Ve stopped a few feet away from Afton, shifted her shoulder, and tilted her head, giving her a slightly girly appearance, though she didn't think so. In fact, Ve was, at that moment, thinking about what kind of a person would invent a word like "brunch". How that applied to Afton was beyond her, but somehow it seemed to apply.

"Afton, is it, love?" She said in a sweetly mellow voice.

Re: Afton E. Lavertue's testing chamber

A faint smell of salt confused Afton and suddenly her fingers were fussing with her bottom lip. She looked the slender, fancy looking lady in the eye as she stood before her and then quickly back to the expanse of the large room. Where on earth was she? She felt odd standing in front of such an elegant and well dressed lady in her own shabby clothes. Her harness was missing a buckle on the left side and her leather corset needed shining. But worst of all were her gold boots. When Afton had received them, they had shone brilliantly, but now they were ragged with a ghastly hole in the right toe exposing her orange and white striped sock.

Afton caught herself staring at her terrible feet with a knot in her stomach. The contrast between Ve's shoes and her own shocked her back to reality.

She abruptly shoved her hand toward the lady, "Yes, ma'am." She looked her in the eye again, desperately trying to unscramble her thoughts.

Ve smiled in wickedly cat-like, her chin tilting up. "You'll do. Follow me." Without another word, she turned on her heal and sauntered back down across the room, making her way for a hall. "Are you coming, dolly?"

With a slow breath, Afton began to follow her. The quietness of their surroundings weighed on her. She wasn't used to the seclusion. She looked ahead to keep track of the frilly dame, shaking off the odd feeling she had. "Um, Miss? Where... where exactly are we?", she hopped a step in an attempt to follow Ve more closely.

"An educational facility. But don't worry none. You're in good hands, you are." And, as far as Ve was concerned, she was. After all. It was her father's island, her father's school. And, regardless of how he'd treated her in the past, she had everything a girl could possibly want here.

"I've been doing some thinking on the useful properties of ducks."

As if it had no other escape, a giggle spilled out of Afton's mouth. Scarlet spread across her cheeks.

"Pardon me, madam, but I'm afraid ducks are only good for one thing. Roasted duck is just awful and there are far more beautiful fowl in my opinion."

Ve stopped and looked at Afton, here eyes wide and presuming. "What do ducks have to do with anything?" Of course, to Ve, it had been Afton that had mentioned ducks and so it was obviously Afton that was a little disturbed. "Did you get the papers they gave you when you came in? Even that little plastic sheet thing?"

Re: Afton E. Lavertue's testing chamber

Afton felt like she was being played, and she hated that more than anything. She wasn't entirely sure if it was intentional in this particular instance, but Cameronn used to do it relentlessly. And she had stopped talking to him months before she left for it.

She tensed up, her shoulders shrugged slightly, and looked as deeply as she could into the strange woman's eye sockets. The lady seemd to be a walking contradiction. As Afton considered her questions, this "educational facility" she found herself in, and ducks she found herself feeling around her bulking skirt pockets in case they, whoever that was, had in fact given her anything. To her surprise, there was something hard in her pocket. She dug into it, seeking the foreign object. Recognition flooded her as she pulled the flexi from her pocket.

How she had forgotten the whole ordeal was frightful, she'd have to think on it all more later, when she could catch her breath. She finally responded, "Oh, yes, ma'am. Here's the flexi. Do you have the...", not remember what the little pin-like tool was called, she stammered a bit, "k-key?"

Ve shrugged, unsure if key was the right word. "This thing?" She withdrew a little pin from her hair. "I'm assuming you know how it works." Ve smiled wickedly again, angling her head down. "You'll need to come with me, lovey. I hope you don't mind a bit of adventure."

As you touch the screen, it makes a "blump" sound and ripples out from where you touch it. The glass then takes on the appearance of paper and begins scrolling off a list of events.

    1. Evaluation of your problem solving ability.

    2. Evaluation of your combat skills.

    3. Evaluation of your piloting skills.

Afton glanced quickly down at the words on her Flexi and back up at Ve. Her mind raced at the word "piloting". Her eyes became narrower and she smiled like the weasel she truly was. "Let's get on with it, then."

"Right," Ve said, analyzing Afton again as she tucked the flexi away. "It. Is this the part where I escort you to the roof? Or does that come after the flying?" Her wicked smile faded into a look of puzzlement, her chin tilting up as she started walking again. "Daddy won't be too pleased with me if I've forgotten again. Have you met daddy?"

Something about this... woman, was starting to really irk, Afton.
"Unless your "daddy" vacations in the northern hemisphere occasionally aboard the Liberty, I doubt it."

She rubbed her right eye for a moment and then sighed dramatically. "To the roof, then?"

"Ah, yes. The roof. I really like roofs, I do, especially here. Such a lovely view. Come along." As they walked, a rare moment of clarity struck Ve. She had to take advantage of it. "Afton," she said, speaking quickly. "They're sending you into the Arena. Why would they send you into the Arena? They only send Moonlighters and Night Creatures into the Arena. What did you do?" She was panicking. Of course, having had her own experiences in the Arena, the ones that drove her insane, could you blame her?

Re: Afton E. Lavertue's testing chamber

Post  Afton E. Lavertue on Thu Sep 13, 2012 1:45 pm

Panic. The tips of her fingers felt cold and the knot in her stomach was back, but bigger. More like a cold hard brick sinking to the bottom of her.
    What am I doing her?
    This is impossible.
    I haven't told a soul.

    AN ARENA?!
I am a child. A stupid, stupid child. Thought I needed to see the world, did I?

Afton suddenly felt trapped, like she was swimming in a bucket, waiting for someone hovering above to pull a trigger. Her paranoia consumed her, but she tried desperately to keep her composure. She lagged behind Ve, a bit.
This lady is crazy! She can't possibly know what she is talking about.

"That's odd. Haven't the slightest idea what a moonlighter is. And night creatures sound dreadful."

Ve stopped again, glancing over her shoulder. She was trying desperately to cling to that last bit of sanity, to not let it consume her. Afton had to know, she had to. If she didn't then Ve would be in trouble, horrible, terrifying trouble.

"Don't lie to me none. I spent half my life keeping clear of this, I did, but now I'm in the thick of things. You're safe with me, I swear you are. If I must, I'll even go in with you." Now that was a terrifying thought, and it almost sent Ve slipping back into that dark abyss of her perpetual delusion where she was safe, protected. "But I cannot tolerate liars."

OOC: btw, A+ on playing well with others. Also, if you haven't looked already, here's the stuff on Moonlighters and all that.

OOC: Thank you! I actually have all my tabs filled to the brim with your amazing wiki for reference. Hah.

IC: The woman was sharp, and while that frightened Afton a bit, it was relieving. She felt foolish. She had told a horrible lie. Not horrible in the horrible way, horrible in the stupid way. Horrible because she wasn't quick enough on her feet to think of something more clever. Embarrassing, really.

    But, do I trust her?
Afton considered her options. There didn't seem to be many at all. She hadn't the slightest clue where she was. The vague answer she had gotten earlier from Ve had not helped one bit and the strange salt scented air had an eerily encasing feeling to it. Like there was no escaping it. She decided that they must be on an island of some sort. Which gave Afton the willies.
    Nowhere to run.
And how was she supposed to trust this... moonstruck woman?

Afton conceded, exhausted by the dilemma. "Yes, of course. I don't much like liars, myself. I am sorry, ma'am."

"It's alright, ducky. I forgive yuh. Jus' come clean. Why're they senden you in?" There! Ve knew that ducks had something to so with Afton. It was something her mum used to say. Quack quack, little duck. No. No, she had to hold on, just a little longer. There was a message she had to deliver. She owed Cadence that much.

OOC: Aww, I feel special. ^^

OOC: I love Ve, Thea. I love her so much.

IC: Afton was caught off guard by the nickname. She tried not to giggle, instead just stared into Ms. Fancy Pants' eyes intensely. She found herself rubbing her eye again.
    "Um."
It's no use. I'm too tired to be creative....

Her hand drifted to her pocket.
"Look... I uh... I don't know all the details. Just that I'm supposed to keep quiet." She raised her eyebrows as she lowered her head slightly toward Ve. Her eyes drifted down to her clenched fist which she had removed from her bulky pocket. Her fingers were wrapped tightly around her key. The teeth were just visible poking out of her hand. She looked back up at Ve, quickly, hoping she was being discrete enough.

OOC: vhy shank yoush. Ve is kinda hard for me to get into. I mean, I don't think like a crazy person... usually. I love your description of Afton. She's so believable.

IC: Ve blinked unknowingly at the key. Her moment of clarity had slipped away and she was lost once more in the depths of her subconscious. "What's it for? I never seen anothin like it." Which, of course, was a bit of a falsehood, she was wearing a key as a necklace, nothing fancy, nothing that would draw attention to itself, just a piece of copper and a few gems. "No wait, Master Harper had sompfin like it. A little silvery thing with chains and baubles. It was so pretty."

Afton rolled her eyes and briskly shoved her treasure back into her pocket. "Very interesting", she said to Ve. She didn't feel like being patient anymore. What little bit of the trip to this island she could recall had been quite rough and unpleasant. Her stomach grumbled.
When did I last eat? She tucked the thought away as quickly as she had conjured it.
"So, uh..." Her eyebrows came together slightly, "Where's this 'arena'?".

Afton clapped her hands together as they hung in front of her skirt. "Canada." she said. She tried not to let her brain get boggled into a mess. They were on an island. She knew that much. And while there are islands that are part of Canada, she doubted this was one of them.
"So... the arena isn't here, then?" She stepped to the side, attempting to see what lie ahead. "Ugggh, no matter. Let's get on with it, then, shall we?"

Ve shrugged. "Oh 'eavens, no. Do you really think they'd keep an Arena on the Transcontinental Island?" She plowed forward again. "Nah, they just meet here up with the others. Dunno why though. Dunno why they have me pickin you up. I am the enemy after all, same as you."

She veered right, aiming for a stairwell, despite her having an acute fear of stairs. She wondered for a moment if there was an elevator, but quickly dismissed it when she remembered that elevators had buttons and buttons were usually attached to something that self-destructed. Stairs it was!
